Garth Evans

Estudió escultura en Slade School of Fine Arts en Londres. Actualmente vive y trabaja en el noreste de Connecticut.
Garth Evans es fundamental en la historia de la escultura británica contemporánea. Su trabajo, que experimenta constantemente con el potencial de las dimensiones, el peso, la técnica y la forma, involucra tanto el acercamiento formal como el conceptual, enfocándose en reconsiderar las posibilidades esculturales. Una de las distinciones de su larga e importante trayectoria es la forma en la que siempre revisa su práctica y rechaza cualquier postura estética que se haya vuelto demasiado cómoda. Este enfoque ha dado lugar a una serie de trabajos aparentemente distintos. Mantener este esfuerzo de autocuestionamiento a lo largo de su carrera le ha demandado conservar un extraordinario nivel de rigor intelectual y emocional. Sus actuales intereses en trabajar con nuevos materiales y procesos con el fin de explorar los límites establecidos han dado como resultado esculturas hechas con una amplia variedad de materiales, entre estos madera, acero, caucho, cerámica plástica y fibra de vidrio. Para Evans este proceso de exploración es profundamente personal; de acuerdo con el artista la mayoría de sus obras, inclusive las más abstractas, “detonan y contienen recuerdos particularmente identificables”. Cada de una de las obras de Garth Evans es ambigua, multifacética y completamente original. Todos sus trabajos, sin importar el material, la forma y ni el método de producción, comparten características de una serenidad intangible, misteriosa y cautivadora.
Desde la década de 1960 Garth Evans ha exhibido a lo largo de Reino Unido y de Estados Unidos, en las influyentes exposiciones colectivas British Sculpture ’72, en la Royal Academy of Arts en Londres (1972) y en The Condition of Sculpture, Hayward Gallery en Londres (1975). En 2003, el artista Richard Deacon curó la exposición retrospectiva de Garth Evans en el Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Su obra se ha representado en diversas colecciones, como en la de la Tate, Londres; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Victoria & Albert Museum y The British Museum.
